The origins of the Empire flying boats date back to a British Air Ministry specification for a passenger and mail aircraft that could establish a scheduled service between the mainland and British Empire colonies in Africa and Australia.
The Empire became officially known as the C-Class. All aircraft operated by Imperial Airways were given a name beginning with C. The first aircraft, G-ADHL Canopus, was completed in June 1936 and took off on July 3. A total of 42 Empires were built, all at the Short brothers' factory in Rochester, England.
Imperial Airways (and its successor BOAC), Qantas, and TEAL used the Empire unofficially, while the Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal New Zealand Air Force, and briefly the Royal Canadian Air Force used them for military missions during World War II, especially for submarine patrol and transport duties.
Model
This is the first flying boat designed by Bart. The design and construction is based on Ivan Pettigrew's models, which are characterized by very light weight and good flight characteristics.
The construction is a sophisticated mix of traditional construction from drawings and laser-cut kit. The fuselage consists of a frame of 5x5 mm balsa and laser-cut rafters. The wing is mainly laser cut. The model must be finished with covering foil to keep the weight down.
The flight characteristics of this model are very good, it is actually a great slow flyer. Because of the deep V fuselage bottom, landing and taking off on the water is very easy. Barts Empire can fly with a 3s5400mAh Lipo already approx. 20 minutes.
The model is offered as a wooden kit, which means that it is only the laser-cut parts and wood for the fairing, etc. Parts such as control cable, foil and levers must be purchased separately.
