As "white swans of the South Atlantic" the ships of the Can San class became famous in the 1960s. The six general cargo carriers of the Hamburg Süd shipping company operated between Europe and South America and ushered in the era of fast cargo ships. More than half of the huge cargo holds were designed as cold stores. The shapely, slender hulls with the strongly projecting stem are more reminiscent of elegant luxury yachts or cruise ships. Indeed, the Cap San Diego and its sister ships were also used by passengers to the Atlantic Passage.
With the increasing spread of containers, the importance of general cargo carriers declined significantly from the 1980s onwards. The Cap San Diego was sold and continued to run under several names and different flags until it was to be scrapped in 1986. The Hanseatic City of Hamburg saved the freighter and brought it back to Hamburg. After extensive restoration and conversion work, the Cap San Diego is now the largest museum cargo ship in the world. The Cap San Diego belongs to Hamburg today, like the Michel or the Landungsbrücken. The landmark can be visited daily. On special occasions, Cap San Diego takes trips on which you can book in.
The Model
The Graupner Premium Line model of the Cap San Diego was built according to original plans of the Cap San Diego Betriebsgesellschaft mbH on a scale of 1 : 100. The San Diego consists of a light but very robust GRP hull. The superstructures are made of lasered ABS parts. Details and small parts are made of metal. The model is spray painted with silk matt colours, the decors are already applied. The colours and materials used make the model look incredibly realistic.
