The Sturmpanzer II was a heavy infantry gun (15-cm sIG 33) of the German Wehrmacht on a self-propelled gun carriage.
During the French campaign, self-propelled guns on the PzKpfw I chassis proved to be very effective.
The response to the identified shortcomings was to build a new self-propelled gun mounted on a modified chassis of the PzKpfw II tank. The original hull was lengthened by 60 cm, widened by 32 cm, the engine was mounted transversely, a road wheel was added and a heavy 15 cm SIG 33 infantry gun 150 mm calibre was fitted. Despite numerous modifications, the SPG did not live up to expectations. It was still too cramped for the crew and the engine overheated. Due to chassis modifications, it was impossible to build new self-propelled guns, which were withdrawn from the main warfare operations of the PzKpfw II tanks. Only 12 were produced in the test series.
